英米豪8サイトのWord of the Year 2019総まとめ【英単語で振り返る2019年！】

こんにちは。

2020年が始まったところですが、皆さん、Word of the Yearというものがあるのをご存知でしょうか。イギリス、アメリカ、オーストラリアなどの辞書サイトや団体が、その年を表す英単語を選ぶものです。

日本でも、今年の漢字というのがありますよね。

それぞれ、検索回数、有識者による選定、一般ユーザーによる投票など、様々な基準により選出されていますが、どれもその1年を代表する英単語が選ばれており、非常に興味深いです。さらに、時事英語と一緒に、英語圏の最新の話題や社会問題を知ることができて、スピーキングやライティングの試験対策にもピッタリなんです！

今回は、英単語で振り返る2019年と題して、英米豪8つのサイト（American Dialect Society, Australian National Dictionary Centre, Cambridge Dictionary, Collins, Dictionary.com, Macquarie Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, Oxford）のWord of the Year 2019をまとめてご紹介します。

American Dialect Society

American Dialect Societyは、研究者やアマチュア、大学教授や学生、芸術愛好家、教師、ライター、大学生、大学院生など様々人たちによって構成される団体で、北米英語や方言、その他の言語を研究しています。Word of the Yearは、毎年メンバーの投票で決定しています。

2019 Word of the Year

(My) Pronouns

American Dialect SocietyのWord of the Yearは、"代名詞"という意味の"pronouns"。性自認は男と女だけではないという認識が広がっている昨今。"pronouns"自体は目新しい言葉ではありませんが、"わたしの代名詞"という意味の"My pronouns"が注目を集めました。

日本はまだ、セクシャルマイノリティへの理解が進んでいるとは言い難い状況だと思います。今後変化していくことを願っています。

WORD OF THE DECADE (2010-2019)

they

2010-2019の10年間を代表する言葉として選ばれたのは、"they"。Word of the Yearと同じく、三人称複数の人を表す代名詞としてありふれた言葉ですが、男でも女でもない性自認の人を示す代名詞として"they"が三人称単数にも使用されるようになりました。

ちなみに、文法的には"they"と同じなので、続くbe動詞はisまたはwas、動詞にも-sは付きません。

POLITICAL WORD OF THE YEAR

政治で話題を集めたのは、"quid pro quo"。 "見返り"という意味の言葉です。

アメリカのトランプ大統領がウクライナの大統領との電話会談で、軍事援助の再開と引き換えに、政敵であるバイデン前副大統領の息子に対する捜査捜査を依頼したという疑惑（ウクライナ疑惑）があり、弾劾裁判の行方が注目されています。ちなみに、過去に弾劾訴追された米大統領は、アンドルー・ジョンソン大統領、ビル・クリントン大統領。トランプ大統領は史上３人目となります。

ok boomer

時代遅れで恩着せがましい意見を押し付けるシニア世代に対して言い返すスラングとして流行した、"ok boomer"。"boomer"は"baby boomer" のことで、1950年代のベビーブームの頃に生まれた人たちを指します。 

近年話題になっている気候変動に関する問題意識には、世代間の隔たりがあり、若い世代からの怒りが、"ok boomer"の流行に繋がったようです。

SLANG/INFORMAL WORD OF THE YEAR

and I oop-

catchphrase of VSCO girls, expressing shock, surprise, or embarrassment
(first used by drag queen Jasmine Masters)

"and I oop-"は、VSCOガールたちの間の流行語です。驚きなどを表すフレーズですね。

そもそもVSCOガールとは、VSCOという写真投稿アプリで流行した、特定のファッション（シュシュ、オーバーサイズのトップス、貝殻のネックレス、白のスニーカーやビルケンシュトックのサンダル）を好む女の子たちのこと。VSCO girlsは、2019年版のタンブラー・ガールとも言われているようです。

求められてもいない意見を述べる人を嘲笑する言葉として、"nobody"が使われるようになりました。

"they"と同じく、時代とともに見慣れた単語が別の意味を持ち始めることが良くあります。インターネットなどで情報収集していないと戸惑いますよね。

EUPHEMISM OF THE YEAR

お金持ちを表す婉曲表現として誕生したのが、"people of means"です。方法、手段といった意味を持つ"means"には、生活の手段の意から、"資力、収入、財産、富"といった意味もあります。

それでもまだ直接的に感じますが、richという単語を使うよりは柔らかい表現になるようです。

DIGITAL WORD OF THE YEAR

トランプ大統領のウクライナ疑惑で話題の弾劾を、英語で"impeach"と言います。これを、im + peach(桃の絵文字)で表現するのが、今年のDIGITAL WORD OF THE YEARとなりました。

日本生まれの絵文字（emoji）は、世界でどんどん進化していますね。

ショートリスト

様々なWord of 〇〇をご紹介しましたが、"(My) Pronouns"以外に2019 Word of the Yearの候補となっていたのは、以下の3つです。

• ok boomer
  retort to someone older expressing out-of-touch or condescending views
• cancel
  withdraw support from someone considered problematic or unacceptable
• Karen
  stereotype of a complaining, self-important white woman, typically a member of Generation X (also “Generation Karen”) 

MOST USEFUL/MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEEDに選ばれた"ok boomer"の他、"問題行動や炎上などによって有名人の支持をやめる"という意味の"cancel"、"文句が多く尊大な白人女性（特に1960年代初頭または半ばから1980年代に生まれたジェネレーションX )"を表す"Karen"が挙げられていました。

ネットを中心に広がったキャンセル・カルチャー/コールアウト・カルチャーにより、"You are cancelled."などのフレーズが頻繁に使われており、オバマ元大統領が、何でも批判しがちな意識高い系の若者に対して苦言を呈したことも。

Karenは、ジェネレーションXの白人女性の典型的な名前だそう。文句や要求の多い中年女性を揶揄する言葉として、Twitterから広がりました。

ちなみに、American Dialect Societyの姉妹団体である、the American Name SocietyのName of the Year for 2019は、史上最も遠い天体の名称として生まれた“Arrokoth” （米先住民族パウハタンの言葉で"空"の意）が選ばれています。

2018年のAmerican Dialect SocietyのWord of the Yearには、tender-age shelter/camp/facilityが選ばれていました。

Australian National Dictionary Centre

Australian National Dictionary Centreは、The Australian National UniversityとOxford University Press Australiaが1988年に共同で設立した、オーストラリア英語の調査機関です。政治、文化、社会を反映したオーストラリアらしい語句を、Word of the Yearに選んでいます。 

Word of the Year for 2019 

voice

a formal channel for Indigenous input into the making of laws and policies affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

今年大賞に選ばれた"voice"は、直訳すると、"アボリジニやトレス海峡諸島民に影響を与える法律や政策の作成への、先住民族による見解のための正式なチャンネル"です。つまり先住民に関係する政策に対して、先住民の声が反映されるようにすることですね。

2019年5月に、アボリジニのケン・ワイアット氏が先住民問題相に任命され、10月には「エアーズロック」の名でも知られる先住民の聖地「ウルル」への登山が禁止となるなど、オーストラリアの政治とアボリジニの先住民の関係に動きのあった一年でした。

2020年も、議会や政府に助言ができる先住民族の代表組織の設立（Voice to Parliament / Voice to government）を盛り込んだ憲法改正が期待されています。

"穏健な意見を持ち、それを公に表明することのないオーストラリア人"を表す"quiet Australians"、"2018年12月～2019年1月にオーストラリアで起きた魚の大量死"を意味する"fish kill"、日本語でも既に定着している"製品やサービスの販売促進のために、自分のプロフィールを利用する人" という意の"influencer"、"気候変動や地球温暖化による危機"を意味する"climate emergency"が候補に挙がったようです。

魚の大量死の一因は気候変動によるものとされています。現在も続く、史上最大規模のbushfireも気候変動の影響と言われており、2020年も環境問題への関心はますます高まりそうです。

2018年はCanberra bubbleが選ばれました。

Cambridge Dictionary

イギリスの出版社であるCambridge Dictionaryは、オンライン辞典も運営しています。そのオンライン検索回数や公式Instagramでの反応を元にWord of the Yearが決まります。

Word of the Year 2019 

upcycling

the activity of making new furniture, objects, etc. out of old or used things or waste material

"中古品や不用品などを使って、新しい家具などの物を作ること"を意味する"upcycling"がWord of the Yearに選ばれました。ただの"recycling"ではなく、新たな価値を生み出す"upcycling"は、2011年にオンラインのCambridge Dictionaryに追加され、近年にわかに注目を集めているそうです。

気候変動への関心が強まった2019年。ファッションデザイナーがupcyclingを取り入れた作品をコレクションで発表するなど、言葉だけでなく、そのアイディアも支持を集めています。

どれも気候変動への懸念から、注目を集めた言葉ばかりですね。

Collins

『コリンズ英英辞典』で有名なイギリスの出版社Collinsが、時代の潮流を表すような新しい言葉を、Word of the Yearに選んでいます。 

WORD OF THE YEAR 2019

climate strike

a form of protest in which people absent themselves from education or work in order to join demonstrations demanding action to counter climate change

"気候変動に対するデモ運動に参加する為に、学校や仕事を休むストライキ"を意味する"climate strike"がWord of the Yearに選ばれました。2015年から使われるようになった言葉ですが、スウェーデンの環境活動家であるグレタさんをきっかに、ストライキを行う人も言葉と爆発的に拡がりました。

"自分の外見、特にサイズに自信を持とうというムーブメント"である"bopo / BoPo"、セレブやインフルエンサーを"支持しない"とする"cancel"、"偽物と分からないくらい精巧に作られた合成映像"である"deepfake"、"反対やリスクがあるにも関わらず、投機的事業やアイディアを貫く"ことを意味する"double down"、"原則や方針を変更しようと既存の政党に参加する人"という意味の"entryist"、"逆境に直面した時の、前向きな目的の追求を称賛する文学・芸術運動"を意味する"hopepunk"、カタカナ語としても馴染みのある"influencer"、"性別や性指向が男性か女性、ホモセクシャルかヘテロセクシャルといった二者択一のカテゴリーに当てはまらない"ことを意味する"nonbinary"、"土地を野生の状態に戻そうとする活動(自然には存在しなくなってしまった生物の再導入など)"を意味する"rewilding"が、その他の候補として挙げられています。

他の団体に比べ、環境問題だけでない幅広いジャンルの言葉が候補に挙がっていますね。

"存在に関する"、"実存主義の"という意味の"existential"がWord of the Yearに選ばれました。

気候変動、銃撃事件、テロリズムなどが世間を騒がせた2019年。existentialという言葉は、文字通りまたは比喩的に、地球や愛する人、私たちの生き方のを存続させるために格闘する感覚を表しており、この1年を象徴するにふさわしいとして選ばれました。様々な困難に直面し、決断を下す時、この言葉は、「私たちは一体何なのか」「我々の目的は何なのか」といった大きな疑問を投げかけてきます。

2019年を象徴する"existential"の意味や背景は、以下のキーワードもチェックすると理解が深まります。

次点として選ばれたのは、"nonbinary"です。"男女や異性愛・同性愛といった区別に当てはまらない性自認や性的指向を持つ"ことを意味します。

2018年に大きく話題になったLGBTムーブメントが、さらなる広がりを見せた一年でもありましたね。

robodebt / robo-debt

a debt owed to the government by a welfare recipient

一般の人々によって選ばれたのは、"社会福祉の受給者による政府への債務"を意味する"robodebt"。

オーストラリアで新たに導入されたrobodebtプログラムが､国税庁の記録を元に、福祉受給者に対して｢福祉金過支給｣などの返済を求める通告をしていました。しかし、プログラム側の計算違いではないかとの苦情が多く、政府がこのrobodebtプログラムの根本的見直しを決めたことが報道されました｡

Committee's Choice Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year 2019

cancel culture / call-out culture / outrage culture

the attitudes within a community which call for or bring about the withdrawal of
support from a public figure, such as cancellation of an acting role, a ban on playing an artist's music, removal from social media, etc., usually in response to an accusation of a socially unacceptable action or comment.

委員会によるWord of the Yearは、"cancel culture"。他の団体でも"cancel"が候補に挙がっていましたが、"社会的に不適切な活動や発言などを理由にセレブなどの支持をやめること"です。具体的には、降板、音楽をかけることを禁止、SNSアカウントの削除などを行うことを指しています。

日本でも似たようなことは起きていますよね。

• mukbang
  a broadcast streamed online in which someone films themselves eating, often a large amount, and speaking to their audience.
• ngangkari 
  an Indigenous practitioner of bush medicine; healer.
• silkpunk
  a subgenre of science fiction which draws on Asian history and culture for setting and aesthetic.
• thicc
  curvaceous; voluptuous.
• whataboutism
  a technique used in responding to an accusation, criticism or difficult question, in which an opposing accusation or criticism is raised.

こちらのショートリストのラインナップは幅が広いです。

社会問題絡みの単語としては、"調査を元にしているように見せかけながら、実は個人的な見解に基づく情報"を意味する"anecdata"は、anecdotal + dataで生まれた造語です。"栄養価が高く健康に良いように見せかけて、食品やそのブランドを売り出すこと"という意味の"healthwashing"、" 反対、非難、批判など難しい質問への対応で論点をずらす手法(そっちこそどうなんだ主義)"である"whataboutism"などがあります。

昨年大きく話題となった気候変動や異常気象に関連するのは、"家畜を水と飼料で飼育するsacrifice paddockの一種で、家畜を一定エリアに閉じ込め、一方で牧草地のパドックがより迅速に回復し、干ばつの期間に侵食による被害を最小限に抑えることができる方法"を意味する"drought lot"、"気候変動の影響を恐れる気持ち"を表す"eco-anxiety"、"飛行機が環境に与えるダメージを背景とした、飛行機で移動する人への批判や嘲笑"を意味する"flight shaming"。

新しい料理として、

"擦り下ろしたチーズを加えたコールスロー"の"cheese slaw"、"擦り下ろしたにんじんとチーズをマヨネーズをマヨネーズで和えたサラダ"である"Broken Hill"も挙がっています。

その他、"スポーツ選手がフィールド上で自身の存在を大きくし、試合展開に影響を与える為に使う時間"を意味する"big minutes"、"タトゥーの入っていない人"を示す"cleanskin"、"Twitterなどの言語データを基に幸福度を分析するアルゴリズム"である"hedonometer"、"観客に語りかけながら大食いの様子を見せるストリーミング放送"という意の"mukbang"、"薬草を扱う先住民族の開業医"を意味する"ngangkari"、"設定と美学のためにアジアの歴史と文化を利用するSFのサブジャンル"である"silkpunk"、"官能的な曲線美"を意味する"thicc"がラインナップされていたそうです。

2018年に委員会が選んだWord of the Year 2018はMe Too、サイト利用者が選んだのはsingle-useでした。

アメリカの老舗辞書サイトMerriam-Westerが、検索回数やその上昇率を元に選ぶWord of the Yearで、人々の興味関心を反映したラインナップになっています。

"性別的に中立の単数代名詞"である"they"が、Word of the Yearに選ばれました。2019年は検索回数上昇率が、前年の313%を記録したそうです。英語には性別の区別のない人を示す代名詞がありませんでした。そのため、600年以上"they"が使われてきました。しかし近年、性自認は「男性」「女性」だけではないという理解が進み、公式に"they"の使用が推奨されるようになりました。

アメリカのトランプ大統領のウクライナ疑惑と弾劾調査を巡り、"quid pro quo"や"impeach"が大きく注目を集めました。また、同じくトランプ大統領のロシア疑惑絡みでは、"snitty"と"exculpate"が検索急上昇ワードになったそうです。

"crawfish"や"crayfish"とも呼ばれる"crawdad"は、"Where the Crawdads Sing"というタイトルの本がベストセラーになったことで、検索回数が急上昇したそうです。

"egregious"は、2018年と2019年の事故で合わせて346人が亡くなった737MAXにおける飛行トラブル問題を、ボーイング社のパイロットが"egregious"と表したことで話題になりました。元々は傑出したという意味だった"egregious"ですが、近年はネガティブな意味で使われるようになっているそうです。

2019年1月には、売春を強要した男を殺したとして、16歳で終身刑を言い渡された女性に対し、テネシー州知事が恩赦を与えることを決めたことにより、"clemency"が検索急上昇ワードになりました。彼女は終身刑から15年に減刑されたそうです。

最も一般的な単語とも言える"The"がラインナップされたのは、オハイオ大学の商標登録騒ぎから。同大学は、正式名称のThe Ohio State Universityの"The"に拘りを持っており、オリジナルグッズとして、"The"をモチーフにしたデザインを作成しました。そのデザインを保護する目的で"The"の商標登録を申請しましたが、却下されたそうです。

ワシントン・ポスト紙のコラムニスト、ジョージ・ウィル氏が使って注目を

集めた単語が、"tergiversation"。"During the government shutdown, Graham’s tergiversations—sorry, this is the precise word—have amazed."のように使われたそうです。ちなみに、この方のコラムは人々の注目度が高いようで、"bloviate"(2012)、 "Gadarene"(2010)と、過去に二度も検索急上昇ワードを生み出しています。

キャンプと同じ単語の"camp"。メトロポリタン美術館で開催された"Camp: Notes on Fashion"というタイトルの展示会により、2019年5月の検索回数が跳ね上がったそうです。ちなみにこのタイトル、1964年のスーザン・ソンタグ氏のエッセイ、"Notes on Camp"を基にしているそうです。

最後にご紹介するOxfordも、気候変動絡みです。"climate emergency"で、"気候変動を軽減・停止したり、それに起因する可能性のある環境被害を回避したりするために、緊急行動が必要な状況"という意味になります。今年は気候科学への一般の認識が高まっただけでなく、国連の議長が「気候変動は我々の時代の決定的問題である」と述べるなど、世界中に環境保護への意識が広まった一年でしたね。9月までには、世間での"climate emergency"の使用頻度が100倍以上になったそうです。

5月にガーディアン紙が、"気候変動の影響力を表すには、climate changeよりもclimate emergency, crisis, breakdownといった言葉が望ましい"と書いたことも、背景にあるようです。

Oxfordのコーパスによると、2019年はとにかく気候変動絡みの用語の使用頻度が劇的に上がった一年であり、ショートリストもその影響が色濃いようです。

2019年は、国連の気候行動サミットや若き環境活動家グレタさんの活躍により、気候変動に対する危機感が広まりました。特に若い人から気候変動の緊急性を訴える強い声が上がる一方、トランプ大統領のようにそれを否定する意見もあります。しかし、環境破壊は戦争や虐殺と同等の行為とみなされ、フランスで飛行機のチケットに環境税が導入されたり、イギリスではCO2排出ゼロ法案を可決するなど、具体的な対策に乗り出す国が増えてきています。また、大手ハンバーガーチェーンが代替肉のバーガーを売り出すなど、企業の動きも活発になっていますね。
