英米豪8つのWord of the year 2018総まとめ【トップに輝いたのは…single-use！】

こんにちは。

2018年の年末から2019年頭にかけて、色々なサイトでWord of the Year 2018が発表されました。英会話のレッスンや英語の試験、仕事やプライベートなど、あらゆる場で時事ネタを英語で話す場面に出会うことがあるかと思います。最新の英単語を押さえておくと、グッと話の幅が広がるんですよね。

このブログでも、8つのサイトのラインナップを取り上げてきましたが、2018年は残念ながら、どれも人々の不信や怒りを表すような単語ばかりでした…。

それぞれのサイトで色んな言葉が候補として挙がっていましたが、英語圏全体で総合的に話題となった言葉はなんだったのでしょうか？ふと興味がわいたので、各サイトのWord of the Year 2018の候補を集計してみました。

8つのサイトの合計によるランキングとともに、2018年に話題になった英単語をまとめてご紹介します！

American Dialect Societyは、研究者やアマチュア、大学教授や学生、芸術愛好家、教師、ライター、大学生、大学院生など様々人たちによって構成される団体で、北米英語や方言、その他の言語を研究しています。Word of the Yearは、毎年メンバーの投票で決定しています。

2018年はtender-age shelter/camp/facilityが選ばれました。 

Australian National Dictionary Centre

Australian National Dictionary Centreは、The Australian National UniversityとOxford University Press Australiaが1988年に共同で設立した、オーストラリア英語の調査機関です。政治、文化、社会を反映したオーストラリアらしい語句を、Word of the Yearに選んでいます。

2018年はCanberra bubbleが選ばれました。

Cambridge Dictionary

イギリスの出版社であるCambridge Dictionaryは、オンライン辞典も運営しています。その編集者が、その年を最も象徴する単語4つを候補に選び、世界中のCambridgeオンライン辞典ファンからの投票で一位が決まります。CambridgeはWord of the Yearではなく、The people's Word of 2018という冠が付けられています。

2018年はnomophobiaが選ばれました。

『コリンズ英英辞典』で有名なイギリスの出版社Collinsが、時代の潮流を表すような新しい言葉を、Word of the Yearに選んでいます。

2018年はsingle-useが選ばれました。

オーストラリアの辞書Macquarie Dictionaryが、新語・造語の中からWord of the Yearを選んでいます。

2018年に委員会が選んだWord of the Year 2018はMe Too、サイト利用者が選んだのはsingle-useでした。

アメリカの老舗辞書サイトMerriam-Westerが、検索回数やその上昇率を元に選ぶWord of the Yearで、人々の興味関心を反映したラインナップになっています。

2018年はjusticeが選ばれました。 

Oxford

伝統あるイギリスのOxfordが、その年の気風を反映し、後世に残るような文化的価値を持つ重要な言葉を選ぶWord of the Yearです。

2018年はtoxicが選ばれました。 

集計方法

上記の8つのサイトから、Word of the Year とその候補になった単語を全部集めました。多方面で話題になった単語を調べたかったので、Word of the Yearとショートリストの区別なく全て1ポイントとして集計しています。そのため、一番ポイントを集めた英単語＝一番多くのサイトで候補に上がった単語になっています。
