こんにちは。
前回の”笑う”に続き、知らないと洋書リーディングで苦戦するのが、”歩く”を意味するたくさんの英単語たちです。単語の意味が分からないと、情景が全く浮かびません。しかも、小説を読んでいる最中に何度も辞書を引いているとその世界に没入できないので、楽しさが半減してしまいます。しかし、一通りざっと単語を覚えておけば、文脈から意味を思い出すことができるので、テンポ良く読み進めることができます。
そこで今日は、さまざまな”歩く”を意味する英単語をご紹介します。
各単語の正確な意味については、Cambridge Dictionaryを使って調べました。
英和辞典だと同じ意味になる単語でも、少しずつニュアンスが異なることが分かりますね。
基本の歩き

to move forward by putting one foot in front of the other and then repeating the action
改めてwalkの意味を調べてみました。歩くは、片足をもう一方の足の前に出す動きを繰り返すことで前に進むことですね。
